What is DTF printing?

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a method where your design is printed onto a special film, coated with adhesive powder and cured, then transferred to fabric with heat and pressure. Our DTF Heat Transfers are made this way.

How DTF printing works

DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. It's a way to decorate textiles and other materials with full-colour designs.

The process

  • Your design is printed onto a special PET film with DTF inks.

  • The print is coated with a fine adhesive powder.

  • The design is cured, which bonds the ink to the film.

  • The printed film is transferred to the fabric with heat and pressure, and the film is peeled off.

The result is a crisp, durable print. Our DTF Heat Transfers are printed in CMYK plus white, and you get them as single transfers or on sheets. A few related terms, such as heat transfer, hot peel and cold peel, are explained in our Dictionary.

DTF compared to other methods

With DTG (Direct-to-Garment), the design is printed straight onto the textile. Screen printing is another traditional method. DTF works on more materials than both, including cotton, polyester, nylon and even leather. It handles intricate designs and strong colours well, so it's popular for custom clothing, promotional products and small batches.
